Maile first entered The Academy of Gymnastics & Dance January 2006, at almost 4 years old, after being given the gift of gymnastics classes. She began with class one (1) day a week for 15 months, then was invited to move up to the next level in April 2007 attending class three (3) days a week.
; which is when she caught the eye of the gym owners/coaches, Tammy & Sorin Salcianu, who noticed her natural talent and ability, beginning Maile’s career as a competitive gymnast. She started working out 14 hours a week, but due to her age during the 2007–2008 season she was only able to compete at one (1) meet and the Nevada State Championships.
At the end of the 2007–2008 season Maile was invited to try working out with the older girls 23 hours a week; following a succession of workouts, she was invited to continue working out with the older girls.
In the summer of 2010 Maile became eligible to participate locally in TOPs (Talent Opportunity Program) testing, a talent search and educational program for female gymnasts ages 8 to 10 held during the months of June and July. Gymnasts are evaluated on physical abilities at the state or regional level. From the local testing she was named as a National TOPs Qualifier, and then travelled to Huntsville, TX in October to be tested on her strength, flexibility and skills. At this testing Maile did quite well and subsequently was named a National TOPs “B” Team Member, where it was discovered that she also had the 2nd highest skills score of all 8 year olds that were tested.
In August 26, 2010 Maile tested through Level 6 in order to compete at Level 7 for the 2010 – 2011 season. In November 2010 Maile began home schooling and training 5 days a week during the day. During that time she made such great strides that in February 2011 (3 meets into the season) she progressed to a Level 8 and finished 3 at three (3) of her 5 meets. At the Nevada State Championships it was discovered that she was the youngest Level 8 in the state of Nevada. Since qualifying for Regional’s, it was also revealed that she was the youngest Level 8 in Region 1 (California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona). rd all-around at her 1st Level 8 meet and 1
Maile continued moving forward with her training for TOPs testing that took place in June & July 2011; by August 15, 2011 Maile was a National TOPs Qualifier as a 9 year old, where she scored 82 out of 90 points available, which was a huge accomplishment. At the National TOPs Testing in October 2011 at the National Training Center (Marta & Bella Karolyi’s Camp) Maile was very consistent in all events and areas of testing. On Wednesday, October 5 th Maile was named as a National TOPs “A” Team
